Why protective clothing needs to emphasize breathability

 

What is breathability?

 

When front-line personnel are thinking about which protective clothing to buy , they must not only choose the protective performance , but also consider the comfort and fit of the protective clothing.

Only the protective clothing that is comfortable to wear will the front -line personnel be willing to wear 

it for a long time . Therefore,it can be protected by protective clothing . Of course,many factors will affect

the comfort of protective clothing . The most important thing is the breathability of the fabrics.

 

When we are dicussing the breathability of  protective clothing , it includes the ability of the protective 

fabric to absorb moisture from the skin and then dissipate it out,which means that the fabric can actively allow moisture or air to pass through the fabric. High air permeability means higher drainage

and moisture permeability.

 

What are the benefits of breathable protection?

There are three ways to dissipate heat from human skin evaporation  of water vapor:When the water

on the skin of the human body evaporates and contains water  vapor , it can take a lot of heat way 

from the skin , making the skin feel cool.

 

Heat conduction :The heat of the skin is transferred to this  layer of air through contact  with the air 

generated by the contact  between the protectve clothing  and then skin. Thermal radiation : the thermal

energy on the skin is radiated outward  through infrared rays . 

 

Althought the heat generated by the human body spreads out in tree ways , most of them are blocked 

by the fabric of the protective clothing . When the protective clothing fabric is breathable , the water 

vapor generated by the evaporation of sweat can pass through the fabric smoothly. It makes the skin dry

,so it is the most effective way to dissipate heat through the way of water vapor , with breathable protective fabrics.

 

Therefore , protective clothing blocks the damage from the outside of the clothing , which contains 

water vapor and liquid . Generally speaking , the fabric of protective clothing will deliberately reduce

the breathable properties to enhance the overall and increase the overall protection, but this will 

make the wearing degree worse and make the frontline personnel reluctant to wear  such protective

clothing . Therefore,when choosing protective clothing ,especially protective clothing must be worn 

for work with a large amount of activity, because the body will generate heat, so choose a protective 

clothing with breathable and protective fabrics are very important.

 

How to measure the breathability of fabrics?

 

Most of them are measured in many different ways . Most of them are to test the humidity difference

on both sides of  the fabric to prove the breathability of the fabric. There are two indicators,which can

be used for reference , namely, the water vapor transmission rate(MVTR) and wet resistance.Indicator(RET)

 

Water vapor Transmission Rate(MVTR) :The value of the water vapor transmission rate(MVTR) is evaluated by calculating the actual amount of water vapor passing through the fabric. The higher the

value , the better the penetration rate , which follows the water vapor to be discharged . Most of the water vapor methods have been tested for 24 hours . Uuder fixed temperature and humidity  conditions,how much weight of water vapor passes through a plane with a fixed area , so the water vapor transmission rate (MVTR), the unit is G/M2*24HR.

 

Therefore, there are two ways to measure the water vapor penetration rate , the positive cup test and test cup test . Of course , each test will be different.

 

Wet impedance index: Wet impedance index  is the resistance of a piece of fabric to moisture evaporation .After seeing the test results, there will be a water tank under the fabric with a home heating plate.  From the measurement results , the moisture resistance of the fabric can be caluated .

If the tested wet resistance value is lower, it means that the fabric is more breathable.Wet impedance

measurement is the principle , which is completely different from water vapor penetration.

 

In conclusion, when frontline personnel choose which protective clothing to buy , in addition to looking for relative protection , breathable protective fabrics are also very important.
