Status Of Biodegradable Materials in The Market

Nowadays, the global advocates the issues, such as environmental protection, reuse, and recycling. All industries can develop in this direction. As far as the Plastic film industry was concerned, there were biodegradable materials in the market. Here we will briefly introduce two kinds which are PLA and PBAT.

 

PLA is the most widely used new type of bio-based and biodegradable polymer material. Its raw material is made from starch raw materials proposed by renewable plant resources (such as corn). Compatibility is recognized as environmentally friendly materials. PBAT (short for polybutylene adipate terephthalate) is a biodegradable random copolymer, specifically a copolyester of adipic acid, 1,4-butanediol, and terephthalic acid (from dimethyl terephthalate).  Both of the above are biodegradable, which can be decomposed naturally through composting under the right time and conditions.

 

The advantages of PLA are good heat resistance, high hardness, and high tensile strength, but on the contrary, high hardness and poor toughness. And PBAT has good function, good ductility, and high heat resistance, but low crystallinity and high viscosity, so the phenomenon of adhesion often occurs.


Both of the above have different characteristics and can be applied in different fields according to different needs.
